Plant ID - Cultivation notes

These general cultivation notes are relevant to all trees, shrubs and grasses in the Plant ID Plant Portfolio, when planting containerised specimens.

Trees
Plant in a hole 1.5 times the size of the root ball, incorporate organic matter, support the tree and mulch well. Keep well watered and weeded until established.

Shrubs
Plant November to March, mulch well, water in drought. Keep weed competition down until well established.

Grasses
Soak root ball thoroughly before planting, incorporate an organic soil improver and general fertiliser. Water in drought and cut deciduous species back in early spring.

For other types of plants, the general guidelines about adding organic matter and using a mulch to keep weeds down and moisture in the soil are also useful. Additionally, most herbaceous perennials are best divided and transplanted in a cool and damp time of the year.
