Plant ID Week 5: Pt.2

Remainder of the fifth Plant ID list.


Mahonia x media 'Charity'; mahonia

An upright evergreen shrub with striking, architectural form. Strongly scented yellow flowers mid-winter in semi-shade.
*RHS award of garden merit.
Size: 2.5x3 m

Cultivation notes:
Plant November to March, add a 5 cm layer of mulch and water in drought conditions. Prefers semi or full shade.












Ilex aquifolium 'J.C. van Tol'; variegated holly

(Looks more like 'Golden van Tol')
A tall evergreen shrub or small tree with variegated foliage. Self-fertile female var. bears abundant red berries in the winter.
*RHS award of garden merit
Size: 6x4 m

Cultivation notes:
Plant November to March, add a 5 cm layer of mulch and water in drought conditions. Variegated forms give best colour in full sun.










Athyrium niponicum var. pictum; Japanese painted fern

A fern with delicate metallic bronze foliage. Suitable for ground cover in damp, shady, naturalistic settings.

Size: height 20-30 cm, width indefinite

Cultivation notes:
Grow in moist, fertile soil in a shaded, sheltered site.










Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin'; red robin

A tall, handsome evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy foliage. Young foliage bright red in spring. Can be used for hedging.
*RHS award of garden merit
Size: 5x5 m

Cultivation notes:
Plant November to March, add a 5 cm layer of mulch and water in drought conditions.





Hebe albicans 'Red Edge'

Note red leaf margins.
Small ground cover shrub with evergreen silver foliage with a red tint. Bears lilac to white flowers in summer.
*RHS award of garden merit.
Size: 45x60 cm

Cultivation notes:
Plant November to March, add a 5 cm layer of mulch and water in drought conditions. Most hebes need little or no pruning.
